I finally caved and I’m so glad I did! After dipping my toes into the world of Chinese dramas, I’ve fallen hard. The CGI? Gorgeous. The costumes? Next level. And don’t even get me started on the plot twists and epic romances that make you pause just to process. With so many new Chinese dramas dropping this year, it’s easy to get overwhelmed, but I’ve managed to narrow down my current obsessions. Whether you’re a longtime C-drama fan or just getting started, these are some of the best Chinese dramas to watch right now and trust me, your watchlist is about to grow.
5. Story of Kunning Palace
Revenge plot? Check. Time travel twist? Check. Strong, complicated heroine? Double check. This one kept me guessing and obsessing the whole way through. I especially loved how the romance unfolded. It is honestly the blueprint for enemies to lovers done right. And Zhang Linghe? Absolutely nailed the role. It was so refreshing to see him play someone a little less noble for once, and he looked very good doing it. Don’t miss out—check this drama on iQIYI!
4. Everlasting Longing
This drama had one of my favorite male leads in any show. Song Weilong played a strong, smart, confident, but also sensitive and loving character really well. The storyline was amazing, and once I got the hang of the names and places, it was easy to follow along, lol. Were some scenes a little overdramatic? Yes. Did I want more? Absolutely! This show is accessible on Viki and has a whopping 30 episodes!
3. Love Between Fairy and Devil
This is when my appreciation for dramatic CGI and over-the-top scenes really started. It was one of the first C-dramas I watched, and at first, I thought the use of CGI and colors was a bit much. But by episode four, I was totally hooked and actually wanted more CGI and vibrant costumes. The romance progression in this drama is honestly one of the best. The leads had amazing chemistry and would do anything for each other … eventually. The female lead seemed soft at first but ended up being one of the strongest characters in the show. The plot was amazing, and the story was easy to follow. Love Between Fairy and Devil is currently available on Netflix.
2. To Fly With You
Who doesn’t love a good sports drama? The speed skating scenes are awesome and really capture how intense the sport is. You’ll be cheering for the characters to win in no time. There’s skating, rivalry, and some seriously cute chemistry between several leads. Check out this totally binge-worthy show on Viki!
1. Love Like the Galaxy
Saving the best for last! This drama completely stole my heart. It has everything: slow-burn romance, smart characters, political drama, and a heroine you’ll be rooting for all the way. The acting is impeccable and the fight scenes are really well choreographed. The story builds beautifully, and when it hits, it truly hits. There’s a scene where Damnum Et Triumphus plays in the background, and it is simply breathtaking. I never thought I’d want more episodes from a drama that has 56 episodes. If you watch only one drama from this list, make it this one. This drama can be found on Viki.
