Klaus and Camille

Reasons Why I Love The Originals and Why You Should Too

I hit a TV show slump and decided to switch things up by diving into older shows instead of scouting for new ones. After stumbling upon intriguing YouTube shorts about Elijah and his cool factor, I took a chance on The Originals. I promised myself if I felt bored after an episode, I’d call it quits. Fast forward to 2 am on a Tuesday, and I was already 10 episodes deep, completely hooked! Surprisingly, I never anticipated falling for an older show, especially one related to The Vampire Diaries (which, let’s be honest, I liked just a little). There’s a unique charm and addictiveness to The Originals, and no, it’s not just Klaus—well, maybe a little, lol. Let’s dive in! Here are the top reasons why I love The Originals and why you should too.

⚠️ Some spoilers ahead…

First, What is this show?

The Originals is a supernatural drama series that follows the Mikaelson family, consisting of original vampires, as they return to New Orleans and confront old alliances, dark secrets, and powerful adversaries in their pursuit of control and survival. The show features vampires, werewolves, witches, and, of course, hybrids!

The Characters

Honestly, these characters are well-thought-out, and the cast does them justice. Everyone’s role is significant to the story, and they stay consistent throughout, well, most of the time. From the noble Elijah to the dangerous and unpredictable Klaus, and even Vincent “takes no crap from anyone” Griffith – my favourite side character. I enjoyed discovering the backstories of each character, like the stories between Marcelle and Klaus, a touching and sometimes crazy father-and-son duo. And even stories about all the Originals and their past lives, loves, and woes.

The Storyline

For a show that’s considered a sequel, its storyline is pretty original – pun intended. I know it all started from TVD, but The Originals managed to shine brightly on its own, crafting a captivating plot that makes you root for villain-like characters and want to join them in the fun.

Always and Forever

Don’t you just loveee family?! Well, you might not if you were related to the Originals. “Always and Forever” is a consistent theme throughout the series. It makes you crave the family bond but also instills a sense of fear. These siblings would do anything for each other but could also do anything to each other. I mean, how many times could you get daggered in the heart before you let go of family ties? I adore the new members of the family too! Hayley and Hope bring in much-needed softness to Klaus, giving the family something to fight for. A family bond like that is hard to come by, and it’s wonderful to watch it unfold.

Klaus and Camille

Because you wished it. Because what’s important to you is important to me. What makes you happy makes me want to keep you so. What scares you, I want to tear apart. I do not wish to watch you from behind glass, Camille.” – Klaus Mikaelson

Do I need to say more??? Team Klamille all the way!! I know a lot of people love Klaroline, and I see it, I do! But having watched both TV shows, I can honestly say that the chemistry between Cami and Klaus literally seeps out of the screen. I can tell that Klaus not only loves Camille but genuinely wants to be a better man in her eyes. Before Hope, there was Camille—the only one who could tame the big bad wolf. Camille loves Klaus too, against her better judgment, and seems like the only one who truly understands him. Does their origin story have some toxic traits? Yes! Does everyone’s couple story origin in TVD and The Originals universe have some toxic traits? Also, yes! If we’re going to hate on them, let’s hate them all, lol.

Elijah

The coolest vampire of them all!! Elijah has the most charisma in the whole show. Even the way he rips out hearts is classic. He wears a perfectly tailored suit and enters every room with unsuspecting calmness. You wouldn’t know that Elijah’s murder rate is only second to Klaus. He treasures the bond of family and would do anything to protect it. His biggest goal in life is to save his brother’s humanity. I appreciate how this character is portrayed and enjoy his consistency throughout the show.

Klaus

So this is love… mmhmm… So this is what makes life divine… 🎶

That song pretty much sums up my feelings for this character. Having watched countless shows and movies, it takes a lot for me to delusionally fall in love with characters. Joseph Morgan’s portrayal of Klaus is so impeccable that I find myself fluttering during certain scenes and lines. I understand his character, even when he attempts to justify a murder spree or two. I happily give my moral compass a coffee break when tuning into this show. Klaus is a key player in all my favourite duos: Klaus and Camille (obviously), Klaus and Elijah, Klaus and Hope, Klaus and Marcelle, and, believe it or not, even Klaus and Stefan from TVD.

More about Klaus…

Klaus is an incredibly passionate character who loves his family above all, yet his fear and mistrust lead him to hurt them. He’s fiercely protective of his family and would do anything in the name of said family. A master strategist, he employs his wit for both nefarious and somewhat noble-ish intents. Despite basically being the story’s villain, you somehow find yourself rooting for him to succeed. Klaus also delivers some pretty hilarious moments that you won’t want to miss. So, to summarize, Klaus is in show, so watch show.

The Ending

If you love a surprise ending or an ending that really didn’t have to happen, like at all… then you’ll love The Originals! I hated the ending of this show, and one of the reasons was because it blindsided me. I was thrown off and wasn’t even ready for the bomb that was dropped on me. I kept waiting for a saving grace that never came.

A few weeks have passed since the finale, and I find myself a changed woman, somewhat appreciating the horrid conclusion that initially broke me. It took weeks, but I’ve come to see the ending as strangely beautiful, aligning with the consistent nature of the characters throughout the series.  Do I wish everyone had a happily-ever-after? YES. Did I resort to exploring Reddit threads with alternate endings to make myself feel better? Also, yes. Yet, considering the current trend of show cancellations, I’ve chosen to value the fact that we got closure, even if it wasn’t the one I expected. In the end, some closure is better than none.

There you have it! Those are the reasons why I love The Originals, and hopefully, you will too. And hey, it’s not just about Klaus and his awesome British accent. The Originals truly is a fantastic show, complete with unexpected twists and turns. The characters are loveable, making you almost wish for the fictional universe to be a reality.
