Bob Hearts Abishola Review: Watch It or Skip It?

Bob hearts abishola

Bob Hearts Abishola is a hilarious romantic comedy that follows the unlikely love story between Bob, a white middle-aged compression sock businessman from Detroit, and Abishola, a Nigerian nurse. When Bob suffers a heart attack, Abishola is assigned as his nurse and the two quickly form a strong bond. Despite their cultural differences and the disapproval of their families, Bob and Abishola’s love for each other blossoms and they must navigate the challenges of a cross-cultural relationship.

What I like about it

As a Nigerian, it’s great to see a spotlight being shone on my country and culture. It feels wonderful to be able to relate to some of the discussions and experiences being depicted on the show. The show runners managed to portray both the beautiful and undesirable aspects of Nigerian culture, as well as American culture.

Each episode is hilarious and also has heartwarming moments. We can see the differences and similarities between Bob and Abishola’s cultures and how they ultimately bring them closer together.

Abishola’s son, Dele is a good addition to the show. His character accurately portrays the struggles of being young in a Nigerian household. The actor also has great comedic timing and never fails to make me smile.

The cast is amazing, and the writing is well-done. They couldn’t have chosen better actors and actresses for each part. Each member of the cast seamlessly embodies their character.

The Jokes!! The jokes are actually HAHA funny. This is obviously expected in a comedy show, but not all shows live up to this expectation. Kemi, Abishola’s best friend, is beyond hilarious and adds a unique twist to the African aunty stereotype.

What I don’t like about it

Overall, there are many things I love about this show, but there are also some aspects that can be improved. One of these is the generalization of Nigerian culture. It makes sense for the show to focus on the Yoruba tribe, given that Abishola is a member of this tribe, but it would be nice to see more representation of other tribes and the cultural differences between them. While there are many commonalities between tribes in Nigeria, there are also some distinct differences.

I understand that some generalization is necessary for the sake of TV and helping viewers understand, but it can be off-putting when certain aspects are depicted as representative of Nigerian culture as a whole rather than specifically Yoruba culture or the character’s personal beliefs.

Favourite Character

My favourite characters are Tunde and Olu, Abishola’s uncle and aunt. They are a hilarious pair that help the couple when necessary, but also manage to make matters worse sometimes.

Re-watchability

I will definitely be rewatching episodes of this show and I hope more seasons are created for the show.

Final Rating

I would rate this show a 7.5 out of 10. It has top notch humour and the cast is great.

Bob Hearts Abishola is a highly entertaining show that does an adequate job of representing Nigerian-American culture. I am excited for future seasons.
